contents

This chapter explores the central role of women in the transmission of culinary knowledge in India, highlighting how food practices function as a vital medium for preserving cultural identity, social values, and historical continuity. It examines the traditional mechanisms through which culinary knowledge has been passed down primarily through oral traditions, family recipes, and community practices where women have acted as custodians of heritage within both domestic and collective spaces. The chapter further analyses the gendered dimensions of food preparation, situating women’s culinary roles within broader socio-cultural frameworks that historically confined them to domestic spheres while simultaneously granting them cultural authority and expertise.

Moving beyond traditional contexts, the chapter investigates the evolving role of women in contemporary culinary landscapes shaped by modernization, globalization, and technological advancement. It highlights how digital platforms, culinary entrepreneurship, and educational initiatives have transformed food practices into tools of empowerment, enabling women to gain visibility, economic independence, and creative expression. The intersection of tradition and innovation is critically examined to demonstrate how women are redefining culinary knowledge as both a cultural resource and a means of social mobility.

Ultimately, the chapter argues that the transmission of culinary knowledge is not merely a domestic activity but a dynamic process that reflects changing gender roles, cultural adaptation, and socio-economic transformation. By bridging past traditions with present innovations, women continue to play a pivotal role in sustaining and reimagining India’s rich culinary heritage in an increasingly globalized world.

Keywords: Culinary Knowledge Transmission; Women and Food Culture; Oral Traditions; Family Recipes; Gender and Food Practices
