| contents |
Abstract: Senescence is the phase where an organism deteriorates owing to old age. This phase usually culminates in death. The ableist anthropocentric capitalism sees old age as a less productive phase of one's life and the older generation as the group that cannot provide labour. This very stance leads to a condition where the aged individuals are treated more as bodies that need care and protection rather than individuals with liberty and perception of self or community. Detective literature, which is primarily an ableist form of literature, fails to showcase detective characters who have passed a certain bar of age to be considered comparatively young. The proposed paper aims to read through certain popular Bengali detective series by Priyanath Mukhopadhyay, Panchkari Dey, Saradindu Bandyopadhyay, Satyajit Ray and Suchitra Bhattacharya through the lens of gerontology to understand the chronological narrative of the health of the elderly characters in their works of detective fiction.

Keywords: old age, detective fiction, ableist narratives, authoritarian detective, narrative of the body
|
