contents
English:
This paper is No. 7 in the series The Classic of Mountains and Seas: A New Paradigm of Theocratic Spatial Cognition. Based on the original dual theocracy theory, its core definition is: there is a natural dual division within the theocratic system between “gods in charge of specific executive power” and “gods in charge of power distribution rights”—those who directly undertake specific affairs execution and perform clear functions (i.e., “doing things”) are manifest gods; those who do not participate in specific affairs execution and specialize in the highest power distribution and final adjudication (i.e., “not doing things”) are hidden gods. The core relationship between the two is the dual balance of executive power and distribution power. The power boundary of manifest gods comes from the distribution of hidden gods, and the authority of hidden gods comes from the control of the power structure. This paper selects two extreme typical cases—Di Jun‑Xihe‑Changxi’s sun‑moon system in The Classic of Mountains and Seas and the ancient Shu theocratic civilization of Sanxingdui—and completes the comprehensive deconstruction of the two‑polar paradigms of the dual theocratic system through textual close reading and mutual verification of archaeological remains. The research shows that: Di Jun’s sun‑moon system is a stable model of dual theocracy where hidden gods hold absolute distribution power and realize hierarchical balance of manifest gods through unequal power division, and the supreme authority of hidden gods originates from the absolute control of the power structure; Sanxingdui’s theocratic system is an extreme alienated form of dual theocracy where the executive power of manifest gods is completely expanded and the distribution power of hidden gods is collectively emptied. Specific administrative powers are disassembled and solidified into professional and equal exclusive sectors, forming a mature theocratic bureaucratization system, and manifest gods who do things completely overwhelm hidden gods who do not do things. The comparison of the two extreme paradigms not only verifies the universal explanatory power of dual theocracy theory for the ancient Chinese theocratic system, but also completely breaks the shackles of the Western anthropological framework of “natural god worship and shamanic communication with gods” on the research of local ancient history, providing a new and verifiable local academic paradigm for the interpretation of The Classic of Mountains and Seas and the research of ancient theocratic civilization. The general outline of this series and all 25 empirical studies have been published concurrently.
