- <div>MC-15, titled Tharsis, is the fifteenth sectional chart in the Atlas of Martian Geography series, the visual companion to Encyclopedia of Martian Geography (Thomas Gangale, JSD).This high-resolution chart covers the equatorial region of Mars from 0°–30°N and 90°–135°E (approximately centered near 15°N, 112.5°E), rendered using MOLA topography with revived classical albedo nomenclature from Schiaparelli, Lowell, and other 19th-century observers overlaid on modern data.The quadrangle is dominated by the Tharsis volcanic province, one of the most prominent and geologically significant features on Mars. It highlights the massive shield volcanoes of Ascraeus Mons, Pavonis Mons, and Arsia Mons, along with the enormous Olympus Mons (the tallest mountain in the Solar System) at the northwestern edge. Also included are the Tharsis Montes, the vast Tharsis Bulge, associated lava flows, and the western portion of the Valles Marineris canyon system where it intersects the Tharsis rise.The chart encompasses a mix of volcanic, tectonic, and erosional terrains that span billions of years of Martian history, from the Noachian to the Amazonian periods. Notable features include extensive lava plains, fault systems, and the highland-lowland transition zones influenced by the Tharsis uplift.MC-15 enriches the official IAU nomenclature with deeper historical and cultural layers from classical astronomy and science fiction, without replacing standardized names.
