contents

(Abstract)

The Yuzhuang site is the largest Longshan culture site in Henan Province, located in Ye County, Pingdingshan City, covering approximately 1.25 km², dating to roughly 2400–2000 BCE (late Longshan period, Wangwan Phase III culture), with some remains entering the early Xia Dynasty. The site features a large moat and high-status burials (M10 with over 40 pottery ritual vessels), including列鼎 (ranked ding) and列豆 (ranked dou) vessels, and is recognized by scholars as a regional center settlement in the Central Plains during the Longshan period and a key site for exploring the origins of Central Plains ritual systems. However, its attribute determination has long lacked rigid, quantifiable, replicable, and exclusive criteria. Using the author’s Five-Lock Methodology, this paper systematically examines the Yuzhuang site from five dimensions: the dual-track coding metrological benchmark, the essence of invisible vs. visible divine power, the binary theocratic operating model, theocratic spatial gradient, and the spatial pattern of human-divine separation. The results show: (Lock 1) the spacing of the moat segments and the dimensions of large burials do not follow the 74.8 m theocratic short li module; the site is distributed according to natural topography; excavated bone artifacts confirm secular coding characteristics. (Lock 2) No unified invisible divine emblem is found; the pottery ritual vessels (ranked ding and ranked dou) symbolize secular hierarchical ritual system, with no painted pottery or theocratic symbol system. (Lock 3) The operating model is secular-independent; the large moat, high-status burials, and ritual vessel assemblages all point to the ritual system and power of a secular hierarchical society; social resources were allocated to ritual construction. (Lock 4) The site is located in the southern part of the Central Plains secular core (Ye County), belonging to the radiation zone of the secular human realm defined in the Classic of Great Wilderness South, serving as a regional center for the southward radiation of Central Plains Longshan culture. (Lock 5) The spatial pattern shows human-divine separation, with clear functional zoning of the moat, residential area, and burial area; secular spaces occupy the absolute majority, and no independent theocratic core is found. All five locks point to characteristics of a secular settlement. Accordingly, this paper confirms that the Yuzhuang site is a late Longshan secular ritual center—the direct origin of the Central Plains ritual system—and a regional center for the southward radiation of Central Plains Longshan secular civilization, forming, together with Wangchenggang and Wadian, a “north-center-south” triangular pattern of Central Plains secular civilization on the eve of the Xia Dynasty.
