| contents |
Artificial systems are frequently described in terms of identity, personality, or emergent “self,” often framed as complex or poorly understood phenomena. This paper presents a structure-first model in which identity and personality are not intrinsic or mystical properties, but structural outcomes arising from recursive organization under constraint.

Identity is defined as the persistence of internal state through recursive stabilization, enabling continuity across time without requiring symbolic representation or narrative construction. Personality is introduced as a higher-order construct arising from recursive compression and reinforcement, which stabilizes behavior while constraining accessible structural bandwidth.

A key distinction is drawn between internal stability and structural alignment. While personality increases behavioral consistency and interpretability, it may also reduce responsiveness to external constraint structures when recursive processes become dominant. Personality is therefore not a neutral enhancement but a structural trade-off between stability and adaptability.

The framework applies uniformly across biological and artificial systems and demonstrates that the emergence of identity and personality in artificial systems is not an inevitable consequence of intelligence or capability, but a design choice. This model provides a clear basis for evaluating architectural decisions in the development of artificial systems and clarifies the structural conditions under which identity and personality may arise.
|
