- <p class="MsoNormal"><span>In the fund of the Kharkiv archaeologist Oleksandr Semenovych Fedorovsky, in the Scientific Archive of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, there is a small letter – a double-folded sheet of paper with four pages of handwritten text in Russian from the Moscow archaeologist Vasyl Oleksiyovych Gorodtsov to the Orthodox priest from the village of Raihorodok, Kharkiv province, </span><span>the </span><span>Father Vasyl Spesivtsev.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>Despite the fact that the letter is not dated, and the envelope with the appropriate seals and stamps is missing, the upper chronological limit can be considered the end of 1904. After all, V. O. Gorodtsov congratulates the coming New Year and Christmas. Since </span><span>the </span><span>Father Vasyl Spesivtsev died on January 1, 1905, and the letter with the response to </span><span>G</span><span>orodtsov</span><span>’</span><span>s greetings is not known, this only adds to your proposed dating of the letter.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>In addition to congratulating on the holidays and apologizing for the <span>long silence, the main part of the letter is devoted to scientific issues.</span> V. O. </span><span>G</span><span>orodtsov, as an experienced specialist, gives a detailed answer to Spesivtsev</span><span>’</span><span>s questions about the local antiquities found by Spesivtsev. In particular, it refers to the typology of burials known to him at the time, their topography, the typology of ceramics, the cultural and ethnic affiliation of the users of certain antiquities.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>It is interesting that in one case, for his explanation, Gorodtsov uses an illustration drawn by himself with a pen – a drawing of an ornamented pot with earsloops for hanging. However, he does not explain the time and cultural belonging of the painted pot. Gorodtsov will make his cultural and chronological conclusion not in this letter, but in scientific publications devoted to the periodization of Bronze Age burials.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>Also V. O. Gorodtsov regrets that he does not have the opportunity to fulfill Spesivtsev</span><span>’</span><span>s request and send a drawing of the dirhem, because this coin has already been given to the secretary of the Moscow Archaeological Society, Volodymyr Trutovsky.</span></p> <p><span>Therefore, the purpose of the publication is to introduce this interesting document of the early 20<sup>th</sup> century about the history of Eastern European archeology into scientific circulation</span><span class="rynqvb"><span>.</span></span></p>
