contents

The Luoyi site is the political, military, and cultural center of the Western Zhou Dynasty in the east, located on the banks of the Chan River in Luoyang City, Henan Province, dating to approximately the 11th century to 771 BCE. It is the eastern capital constructed by the Western Zhou Dynasty. The site features large rammed-earth architectural foundations, bronze casting workshops, bone-working workshops, burial areas, and sacrificial remains, and is widely recognized by scholars as the location of Chengzhou of the Western Zhou. However, its attribute determination has long lacked rigid, quantifiable, replicable, and exclusive criteria. Using the author’s Five-Lock Methodology, this paper systematically examines the Luoyi site from five dimensions: the dual-track coding metrological benchmark, the essence of invisible vs. visible divine power, the binary theocratic operating model, theocratic spatial gradient, and the spatial pattern of human-divine separation. The results show: (Lock 1) the site shows no 74.8 m theocratic short li module, no regular city walls, and no astronomical orientation features; excavated bone rulers confirm secular coding characteristics. (Lock 2) No unified invisible divine emblem is found; the decorative motifs on bronze ritual vessels symbolize secular royal hierarchy; sacrificial remains are primarily ancestor worship and state altar rituals. (Lock 3) The operating model is secular-independent; the core facilities—city layout, palaces, workshops, and burials—all point to secular governance, craft production, and military defense; social resources were allocated to secular construction. (Lock 4) The site is located in the Luoyang Basin, within the heartland of the Central Plains secular core, serving as the political center for the Zhou Dynasty’s eastern expansion. (Lock 5) The spatial pattern shows human-divine separation, with clear functional zoning of the palace area, workshop areas, and burial areas; sacrificial spaces are attached to the palace area, with no independent theocratic core. All five locks point to characteristics of a secular capital. Accordingly, this paper confirms that the Luoyi site is the Western Zhou eastern capital—the secular political center for the Zhou Dynasty’s eastern expansion—forming, together with Zhouyuan (Zongzhou), the “Zongzhou–Chengzhou” dual-capital secular pattern of the Western Zhou, marking the complete consolidation of the Western Zhou secular governance system.
