| contents |

The Zaojiaoshu site is a typical basic-level settlement of the Erlitou culture period in the Luoyang Basin during the Xia Dynasty, located north of Zaojiaoshu Village, Luolong District, Luoyang City, Henan Province, dating approximately from the late phase II to the late phase IV of the Erlitou site (c. 1700–1500 BCE). The site features 117 storage pits, 5 house foundations, 1 well, a segment of an ancient river channel, and burials, yielding large quantities of pottery, stone tools, shell tools, and abundant plant and animal remains, including the earliest known soybean from the Xia Dynasty in China, providing key materials for the study of basic-level settlement patterns, agricultural economy, and social structure of the Xia Dynasty. However, its attribute determination has long lacked rigid, quantifiable, replicable, and exclusive criteria. Using the author’s Five-Lock Methodology, this paper systematically examines the Zaojiaoshu site from five dimensions: the dual-track coding metrological benchmark, the essence of invisible vs. visible divine power, the binary theocratic operating model, theocratic spatial gradient, and the spatial pattern of human-divine separation. The results show: (Lock 1) the site shows no 74.8 m theocratic short li module, no regular city walls, central axis, or astronomical orientation features; excavated bone rulers confirm secular coding characteristics. (Lock 2) No unified invisible divine emblem is found; excavated pottery consists mainly of daily-use vessels, with no painted pottery or standardized theocratic symbol system. (Lock 3) The operating model is secular-independent; the site is dominated by storage pits, house foundations, wells, ash pits, and burials; social resources were allocated to daily production and life, with no theocratic sacrificial facilities. (Lock 4) The site is located in the heartland of the Central Plains secular core (Luoyang Basin), within the radiation zone of the Classic of Great Wilderness, serving as a basic-level settlement around the Erlitou capital. (Lock 5) The spatial pattern shows human-divine separation, with clear functional zoning of storage pit areas, house foundation areas, and burial areas, and no independent theocratic core. All five locks point to characteristics of a secular settlement. Accordingly, this paper confirms that the Zaojiaoshu site is a Xia Dynasty basic-level secular settlement—a benchmark basic-level settlement around the Erlitou capital—completing the full secular governance hierarchy from the capital (Erlitou) to basic-level settlements (Zaojiaoshu) in the Xia Dynasty.

|
