contents
Why do some people read and write effortlessly but cannot grasp mathematics? Why do others solve complex equations but cannot string two sentences together? And why do a third group possess brilliant intuition yet come across as scattered and socially awkward? Existing theories of intelligence describe these differences. But they do not explain where they come from.

This paper presents the spatial model of intelligence. Intelligence evolved as an apparatus for spatial search (Orlov, 2026). Its architecture reflects the sequential mastery of new spatial dimensions: 1D (sequences, speech), 2D (logic, mathematics), 3D (navigation, volumetric thinking), and 4D (time, consciousness). We outline a hierarchy of cognitive systems, each with its own neurobiological foundation, energy cost, and class of problems.

The model explains individual differences (humanists, techies, geniuses, strategists), format conflict (why equations written as text are not solved), the brain's economy mode (why stress makes us dumber), and the nature of consciousness. The model is testable and applicable to building AI with spatial architecture. It shows why current large language models (LLMs) are only 1D — and what components are needed to move toward 2D, 3D, and 4D.
