| contents | <p class="MsoNormal"><em><span>The evolution of performing arts in Tamil Nadu intertwines with religious places of worship. This paper examines the Bhavani Sangameswarar Temple for study. It is one of the seven sacred Shiva abodes of the Kongu region and serves as a unique confluence of architectural grandeur and artistic heritage of Tamil Nadu. The study analyses the dual existence of 'Classical' and 'Folk' dance forms as depicted in the sculptures of the temple with the help of field research and textual data. The pillars portray the 'Thandava' postures of Lord Shiva, which represent the classical tradition. They preserve rare folk depictions such as 'Pinnal Kolattam' (braided stick dance), 'Kumbi Kol Aadal', and 'Komali' (clown/buffoon) as well as grand structural temples. It highlights the cultural heritage of the Kongu region and its historical links with Chera traditions. The article concludes that the sculptures of the Sangameswarar Temple stand as evidence of historical heritage and affirms the development and preservation of Tamil performing arts over the ages. Hence, this study documents the artistic background of the temple by employing a descriptive methodology that focuses on its history, worship practices, and related aspects.</span></em></p> |
