The functionalist perspective approached the media
from the standpoint of its communicative functions and behavioral or cognitive effects on audiences,
focusing on how the media influence the formation of public opinion.
Conversely, the critical perspective offered a radically different vision rooted in Marxist philosophy,
which regards the media as instruments of cultural and ideological domination serving the interests of
ruling elites. Later critical reflections challenged opinion polling as a producer of “artificial publics” and
illusory representations of public opinion. This study concludes that integrating functionalist and critical
perspectives offers a more comprehensive understanding of the nature and dynamics of public opinion
in the digital age, where communicative effects and ideological structures increasingly intersect within
a complex, multi-actor public sphere.
|
