Closest to S. gingera sp. nov., sharing the ocellar triangle, but differing in having the vertex and gena setae are not so strong and in the wing venation. Also similar to S. crinita sp. nov., differing in the elongate vertex and gena setae, broader head, and ocellar triangle.

Etymology

From the Latin ‘ regulus ’, ‘diminutive of king’, from the collection of the unique type on the small King Island.

Type material

Holotype

AUSTRALIA – Tasmania • ♀; King Is., Pegarah Nature Reserve; 39.9441° S, 143.9905° E; 19 Nov.–16 Dec. 2023; S.J. Clypeal process semicircular, apex rounded; dorsally rounded, convex, lacking a carina; in profile evenly curved from base to apex, apical angle slightly acute. Mandible moderately narrow, slightly narrowed medially from base, ventral margin weakly concave; slightly twisted, outwardly polished and shining distal of bend, coriaceous and dull basally; in ventral view distinctly elbowed externally, internal margin nearly straight. Apex of mandible vertical, with teeth distinctly stronger ventrally. Malar space 1/4 as long as width of base of mandible. Dorsal setae of head about as long as flagellar width or scarcely longer. Frons with distinct punctures, dense near antennae and eyes, 2–3 pit widths apart or more in central frons. Vertex and gena setae conspicuous, nearly twice as long as setae of frons and stronger, erect and directed anterior. Frons microsculpture coriaceous, matte but without strong surface texture. Vertex in dorsal view very slightly concave; occipital margin narrowly carinate posterior of ocelli, becoming broadly rounded laterally. Lateral ocelli nearly touching vertex crest. Ocellar triangle anterior angle strongly obtuse. Head rounded shortly posterior to eyes. Eye setae short, only about as long as 1–2 ommatidia. Dorsum of head in lateral view slightly convex, head deepest on line through posterior margin of eye. Venter of head posterior to mandible flat in lateral view, with relatively sparse setae. Genal angle present posteriorly, not prominent, head relatively flat. Side of head posterior to eye convex, with a broad area of colliculate microsculpture extending to vertex crest. Gena ventral to eye convex; sculpture coriaceous ventrally and posterolaterally, with broad band of tesselate-colliculate sculpture extending diagonally on each side from anterior margin of eye to posteroventral margin of head. Postgenal depression very shallow, nearly absent. Antenna extending to posterior margin of pronotum.

MESOSOMA. Anterior margin of dorsal pronotal area in lateral view strongly angulate, pronotal disc distinctly flattened. Pronotal setae longer than flagellar width. Propodeal disc laterally coarsely striate; median carina absent; transverse carina faintly present laterally, obsolete medially; metapleural carinae present posteriorly, fading anteriorly. Profemur robust, about twice as long as wide and strongly convex dorsally, with both anterior and posterior surfaces convex, not strongly compressed, more or less straight in dorsal view.

METASOMA. Shining, with faint microsculpture laterally, T4–6 punctate with moderately long setae. S4–6 each with a pair of long erect setae. Sixth sternum glabrous medially, with a mix of long and short setae laterally.

COLOR. Body entirely dark brown to black. Antenna entirely dark brown to black. Mandible black. Legs all dark brown to black.

WINGS. Membrane weakly infuscate. Basal cells of fore wing densely and conspicuously setose. Cell 1M weakly convex posteriorly, corner posteroapical. Distal portion of vein Rs nearly straight but not quite meeting anterior wing margin, poststigmal abscissa of R1 indistinct.

MEASUREMENTS.
