| contents |
Dental caries continues to be a major oral health problem in children, often complicated by limited cooperation,
accessibility issues, and high treatment costs. The shift toward minimal intervention dentistry has encouraged the
use of non-invasive approaches for caries control. Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) has gained prominence as an
effective agent for arresting and preventing dental caries due to its dual action of antibacterial activity and
remineralization.
SDF works by inhibiting cariogenic microorganisms, enhancing mineral deposition, and preserving dentinal
structure. Clinical studies have demonstrated high success rates in arresting carious lesions, particularly in primary
teeth. Its simple application, affordability, and minimal need for patient compliance make it highly suitable for
young children, anxious patients, and those with special healthcare needs.
However, its use is limited by aesthetic concerns, primarily the dark discoloration of treated lesions. Despite this
drawback, SDF remains a valuable tool in pediatric dentistry, especially in community and resource-limited
settings. This review highlights the properties, clinical applications, benefits, and limitations of SDF, emphasizing
its role in contemporary caries management.
|
