| contents | <p>Building on the insights from the Digital Preservation in the Cloud? panel at iPRES 2024, this panel extended the conversation by including representatives of storage infrastructure, spanning hyperscale cloud providers, locally owned cloud services, and preservation-oriented storage models. Earlier discussions centred primarily on the perspectives of digital preservation practitioners; this panel created a forum for direct dialogue between the digital preservation community and those designing and operating the infrastructure that increasingly underpins preservation services.<br>Questions for the panel were crowdsourced through an open call to the community and curated to reflect shared concerns and priorities. The discussion explored themes such as portability and avoiding vendor lock-in, data sovereignty, transparency in support of certification, long-term cost modelling, environmental sustainability, integrity and resilience, and the evolving skills needed to manage cloud-based preservation environments.<br>The session highlighted areas of strong alignment - particularly the importance of open standards, shared responsibility, and designing systems for change - while also surfacing differing perspectives shaped by scale, governance models, and service approaches. By fostering an open exchange between providers and practitioners, the panel underscored an emerging shift from transactional relationships toward collaborative stewardship of digital heritage.
