Focusing<br>on the instability of the 9th–10th centuries—particularly in regions such as Provence—this paper<br>argues that the concept of the Miles Christi (Soldier of Christ) arose not as a sudden ideological<br>innovation, but as a practical response to sustained political fragmentation, external threat, and<br>the failure of traditional protective structures.
