contents
The EATRIS Go Green Framework provides a structured approach to integrating environmental sustainability into the Digital Transformation (DT) and Research Infrastructure (RI) of EATRIS. Recognising the environmental impact of RIs stemming from research activities, digital technologies, and vocational operations, this framework offers resources and a roadmap to reduce carbon emissions, optimise resource consumption, and embed sustainable practices across all EATRIS national nodes and member institutions.

Sustainability in DT is important; Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and data storage require energy-intensive processes, while laboratory research, travel, and event organisation further contribute to EATRIS’s environmental footprint. To address these challenges, this framework is built upon five guiding principles:

Carbon Reduction: Actively reducing carbon emissions through energy-efficient technologies and operational adjustments.

Energy-Efficient IT: Implementing green computing practices, including energy-optimised algorithms and sustainable cloud solutions.

Sustainability Integration: Embedding sustainability into AI-driven research, laboratory practices, events, and procurement.

Collaboration and Awareness: Facilitating cross-node collaboration and promoting awareness of environmental best practices across EATRIS.

Continuous Improvement: Establishing measurable metrics to track, refine, and enhance sustainability maturity over time.
