contents
Abstract This study assesses the feasibility of agrivoltaic systems for simultaneous food and energy production within the desert environment of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). As the region faces extreme heat and water scarcity, this research evaluates the potential of integrated solar-agricultural systems to mitigate heat stress, reduce irrigation requirements, and maintain agricultural productivity while generating renewable electricity.

Methodology Using a desktop research approach, the study synthesizes data from Mediterranean and global agrivoltaic experiments with UAE-specific climatic parameters, including solar irradiance, temperature, humidity, and evapotranspiration. Estimates for water-use efficiency and land equivalency ratios (LER) were derived from empirical relationships regarding the effects of shading on crop performance in arid climates.

Findings The results indicate that agrivoltaic systems in the UAE can achieve irrigation savings of 20–35% while maintaining crop yields at 70–90% of baseline levels, depending on the specific crop type and system design. The findings suggest that substantial clean energy can be generated without compromising agricultural land, directly supporting the UAE’s strategic goals for food security and the "Energy Strategy 2050."

Significance This research provides a specialized analysis of dual land-use viability in extreme arid climates. By integrating global performance data with local environmental variables, it offers a framework for implementing agrivoltaics as a solution to the water-energy-food nexus in the Gulf region.
