contents <p>This chapter explores the emerging challenges of investigative cooperation within the European area in light of the increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into information exchange mechanisms. It begins by examining the evolving relationship between AI and criminal proceedings, highlighting the transformative impact of algorithmic tools on investigative practices and evidentiary processes.</p> <p>The analysis then focuses on facial recognition technologies, addressing their operational use, investigative potential, and growing relevance in cross-border cooperation. Particular attention is paid to the risks associated with algorithmic identification, including issues of accuracy, bias, transparency, and fundamental rights protection within both the European and broader international context.</p> <p>The chapter further investigates the implications of AI-driven tools in the field of investigative cooperation, emphasizing how automated systems are reshaping the collection, processing, and sharing of information among judicial and law enforcement authorities. In this perspective, it critically assesses the tension between efficiency and safeguards, as well as the challenges of ensuring accountability and compliance with European legal standards.</p> <p>Overall, the chapter highlights the need for a balanced and principled approach to the adoption of AI in criminal justice cooperation, capable of reconciling technological innovation with the protection of fundamental rights and the integrity of the procedural framework.</p>
