| contents | <p class="MsoNormal"><span>Facial moisturizers are a crucial component of daily skincare and dermatological care because they improve skin hydration, prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and maintain and restore the stratum corneum's (SC) barrier function. Occlusives, which create a physical barrier, humectants, which draw and bind water, and emollients, which close intercellular gaps and replenish barrier lipids, are the three main ingredient classes that make up their mechanism. Sophisticated modern formulations balance these ingredients to produce gels, lotions, and creams that are appropriate for a variety of skin types and conditions, from managing chronic inflammatory diseases like rosacea and atopic dermatitis to treating simple xerosis (dryness). This review summarizes our current understanding of moisturizer science, from its fundamental mechanisms to its critical role in clinical dermatology.</span></p> |
