There are uneven development outcomes even within the geographically and culturally connected regions Because of differences pertaining to the various development indicators. Such disparities are widely reflected in the Konkan coast of Maharashtra. Even though they share similar geographical characteristics, they vary significantly as far as regional development is concerned. The present study examines regional disparities in socio-economic development across the districts of the Konkan coast using recent district-level data. The analysis includes five districts—Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. The study relies entirely on secondary data obtained from the Economic Survey of Maharashtra (2024–25) and related government publications, with most indicators referring to the year 2023–24. To capture the multidimensional nature of development, the study uses six indicators representing economic, social, and infrastructural aspects, including per capita income, employment in establishments, banking access, literacy rate, road density, and motor vehicle ownership. A Composite Development Index (CDI) is constructed using the min–max normalization method and equal weighting of indicators. With the help of the index, the disparities among the regions within the Konkan area have been assessed. The findings indicate significant variations in development levels, with northern districts such as Thane and Raigad displaying relatively higher levels of socio-economic development compared to the southern districts. Factors such as proximity to the Mumbai metropolitan region, industrialization, infrastructure availability, and financial inclusion appear to play an important role in exhibiting these disparities. The study highlights the need for region-specific development strategies to address these imbalances and promote more balanced and inclusive development across the Konkan coast.

|
