contents
This paper investigates the link between Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and depression through a biopsychosocial framework, highlighting how gut–brain axis dysregulation, HPA‑axis activation, and microbiota imbalance intersect with cognitive distortions, negative illness perceptions, and social stigma. It demonstrates how chronic gastrointestinal symptoms undermine daily functioning and quality of life, increasing vulnerability to depressive states. The review evaluates current evidence, acknowledges challenges in establishing causality, and emphasises the need for personalised, interdisciplinary approaches to improve outcomes for individuals experiencing both IBS and depression.
