Measuring Web Accessibility Dimensions: An Evaluation of Understandability and Robustness in IIT Library Websites

| contents | <p>The aim of this paper is to evaluate the websites of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Libraries in terms of their accessibility and reliability according to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1). There is a lack of literature regarding the accessibility and robustness of IIT library websites through automated technology. To determine the compliance of these websites with the accessibility standards, the Siteimprove web tool was utilised, and the results were then analysed using spreadsheet software for enhanced understanding. The methodology and approach presented in this paper offer significant value regarding their reusability and reproducibility. If we consider an overall evaluation, under the Understandable principle, three guidelines followed by one success criterion each, i.e., Readable: Language of Page, Predictable: On Input, and Input Assistant: Labels of Instructions, possess a minimum issue value and thus provide a sound and understandable website in terms of accessibility. On the other hand, if we consider the Robust principle, one guideline followed by two success criteria, i.e., Compatible: Parsing & Name, Role, Value, possess a minimum issue to result except for IIT Delhi & IIT Palakkad. In the case of Parsing success criterion, these two library websites’ homepages scored a huge number of issues (i.e., 48 & 34 respectively) and need to improve more. The study's findings indicate that while the library websites of IITs in India feature a well-structured and user-friendly homepage in terms of accessibility for VIPs, numerous problems remain that need to be addressed.</p> |
