contents The radiation fields in massive stellar clusters significantly affect planet-forming disk evolution. In very massive clusters, which also happen to be distant, we can only study this indirectly by statistically studying disk properties. However there is ambiguity about the various processes that contribute to disk evolution to give what we observe. The ELT will enable us to spatially resolve the ionization fronts of disks undergoing external photoevaporation in some of these distant, massive, clusters for the first time. We will be able to use clusters like Trumpler 14 to demonstrate how external radiation fields imprint upon the disks. I will discuss the motivation for very high resolution observations of evaporating disks in distant clusters. I will also discuss how we must first use spatially unresolved emission to determine which are the best targets and the means by which we can do so.
