| contents | <p>Fermat’s last theorem or Fermat conjecture (as in old text) was proposed first by the French <br>mathematician Pierre de Fermat circa 1637 in the margin of the copy of Arithmatica (*). It has been the <br>subject of interest for too long for many in the Number Theory field of mathematics. Over the centuries <br>many world-renowned mathematicians like Leonhard Euler, David Hilbert, Adrien-Marie Legendre, Carl <br>Friedrich Gauss to name a few have proposed solutions for same but only for certain powers of n (*). It <br>wasn’t completely solved until recently when Andrew Wiles proposed a solution to same in 1994 which <br>got later published in 1995 (*). Even then the solution is highly complex utilizing advanced mathematical <br>techniques. However, the problem statement of Fermat’s last theorem is easily understandable to most <br>with basic knowledge of mathematics. Fermat himself famously quoted that he had a simple solution <br>but could not find space enough in the margin of the book to write the same. In this paper I propose a <br>solution to Fermat’s last theorem using basic Algebra and Induction.</p> |
