- <p class="a"><span>In line with a comprehensive study of the contribution of the Russian intelligentsia to the study of Crimea, an analysis is proposed of the historical and Crimean studies activities of the prominent Soviet ethnographer Boris Alekseevich Kuftin (1892–1953) in the 1920s. The scholar managed in his research to combine the study of material culture and the consideration of problems of ethnogenesis. Throughout 1923–1928, B. A. Kuftin conducted several large-scale folk-ethnographic expeditions in Crimea. On the basis of archival materials from the Scientific Archive of the Russian Ethnographic Museum, the Department of Written Sources of the State Historical Museum, the State Archive of the Russian Federation, the St. Petersburg Branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the stock collections of the RME, the course of the research work and its results have been reconstructed. Although the attention of the employees of the expedition detachments was captured by various aspects of Crimean ethnography (the everyday life and oral folk art of the Bulgarians and Gypsies), the main attention of the head of the work was concentrated on the study of the peculiarities of the housing and everyday life of the Crimean Tatars. The generalization by B. A. Kuftin of a significant volume of material from working notes and the analysis of the items of everyday life and culture of the Crimean Tatars transferred to the museums resulted in several summarizing works devoted to the ethnography of the South Coast Crimean Tatar settlements and, in particular, to the characterization of housing. The influence on the fate of the scholar of the Ethnographic Conference of 1929, which shifted Kuftin’s scientific interests away from Crimea, is also traced.</span></p> <p class="a"><span>Keywords: B.
