- <p>This article analyzes the situation at the Prince Bezborodko Institute of History and Philology in Nizhyn at the beginning of the 20th century. Prince Bezborodko’s educational institutions that preceded the Institute (the Gymnasium of Higher Sciences, the Physics and Mathematics Lyceum, and the Law Lyceum) are briefly analyzed, and their contribution to the development of science and culture is highlighted through the figures of their distinguished graduates. The author devotes special attention to the figure of Mykola Lavrovsky – the first director of the Institute of History and Philology. Lavrovsky was a talented administrator who successfully assembled a brilliant faculty and was able to organize teaching at a high level.<br>The author also highlights the distinctive features of a provincial higher education institution, which, according to its charter, is on par with those in the capital. The author further analyzes the shortcomings of the appointed director and proposes extending the practice of electing the director by the Institute’s faculty to the Institute itself. The article also justifies the need to revise the Institute’s curriculum, specifically by reducing the number of hours devoted to teaching classical languages and classical<br>authors. The author also proposes increasing the number of hours devoted to Slavic studies and modern history, particularly the history of Ukraine. The article also analyzes the living conditions of students at the Institute, which likewise required changes.</p>
