- <p>According to recent estimates, up to 40% of dementia cases may be preventable through the modification of risk factors (Livingston et al., 2020; 2024). However, current prevention models overlook a factor that affects a substantial portion of the population: the architecture of everyday labor. Converging lines of evidence from neuroscience demonstrate that dysfunction of the dopaminergic mesocorticolimbic pathway is a key mechanism underlying apathy and cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease (Scattoni et al., 2025; Iaccarino et al., 2021; Stefani et al., 2025). Concurrently, Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and related interventions show that supporting autonomy, competence, and relatedness can mitigate neuropsychiatric symptoms even in advanced dementia (Deci & Ryan, 1985; Haerens et al., 2025; Gitlin et al., 2014). These two evidence streams permit the formulation of a novel hypothesis: a work environment that systematically suppresses agency and subjectivity—exemplified by rigid, externally controlled, and punishment-driven KPI-centric systems—constitutes a prolonged risk factor for neurodegeneration. The article reframes dementia as an architectural rather than a purely medical challenge and introduces the principles of Reflexive-Constructive Methodology (RCM) as tools for designing work ecosystems that support cognitive health. A falsifiable hypothesis is proposed: individuals whose careers unfolded in environments characterized by high autonomy and meaningfulness will demonstrate better preservation of entorhinal cortex function and episodic memory in old age. The paper outlines a concrete observational study design to test this prediction and calls for a paradigm shift in occupational health and organizational design.</p>
