| contents |
This policy brief examines the potential economic and environmental implications of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies for Oman, with a particular focus on its alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water). The agreement, adopted at the WTO 12th Ministerial Conference in 2022, aims to eliminate harmful fisheries subsidies that contribute to overfishing and the depletion of marine resources.

The analysis evaluates both short-term and long-term impacts on Oman’s fisheries sector. In the short term, the removal of subsidies—particularly for fuel, vessel operations, and fishing equipment—is expected to increase operating costs for fishing firms, potentially leading to higher consumer prices and reduced output. However, in the long term, the policy is expected to promote sustainable fishing practices, improve fish stock levels, and stabilize supply.

The findings suggest that compliance with the WTO agreement could enhance Oman’s international reputation as a sustainable fishing nation, facilitating access to environmentally sensitive export markets and supporting tourism and investment. The brief also highlights the need for transitional policy support to mitigate short-term economic disruptions while ensuring long-term sustainability.

Overall, the study contributes to policy discussions on balancing economic efficiency and environmental sustainability in the fisheries sector within the broader framework of international trade governance.
|
