| contents |
This study investigates the onset of transonic buffet in large
civil fan blades numerically. As fan blades are designed to be
longer and more flexible to meet increasing efficiency demands,
they become more susceptible to aerodynamic instabilities. One
such instability, transonic buffet, is characterised by unsteady
shock wave–boundary layer interactions (SWBLI) that can induce
periodic shock motion and potential structural vibrations.
Using the in-house unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes
(URANS) solver AU3D, this work analyses the shock movement
behaviour on a civil fan blade, where high-speed aeroelastic
instability was observed experimentally. A range of operating
conditions is simulated, revealing distinct regimes of shock behaviour.
Buffet here is identified around the design speed of the
fan at flow rates greater than those for peak efficiency. Particular
attention is given to identifying the onset of buffet and examining
its dominant frequency and modal forcing characteristics. This
paper aims to provide deeper understanding into the underlying
mechanisms of shock buffet in civil fan blades.
|
