contents
This document summarizes the sampling activities and preliminary findings of a field campaign carried out from 7 to 10 September 2025 on Salina Island, Aeolian Archipelago, Sicily, Italy. The study aimed to characterize the halophilic and halotolerant microbial community inhabiting Lake Lingua, a hypersaline coastal lake located on Salina Island, with particular attention to the algal component. The lake covers approximately 15,000 m², reaches a maximum depth of 3 m, and shows salinity values between 60 and 70 g/L. Preliminary observations revealed that the main algal groups thriving in the lake were filamentous, colonial, and unicellular cyanobacteria, pennate diatoms, and Dunaliella. This report is intended as a preliminary contribution and will be further supported by advanced analyses, including molecular, electron microscopy, and chemical investigations.
