  • These two blocks, one decorated with a panther and one decorated with a lion, flanked the entrance to the sanctuary of Pythian Apollo on the acropolis of the island of Thasos. Probably arranged on the lower walls, they bear witness to the dawn of marble sculpture in the Greek world, which borrowed from an Eastern repertoire.
