| contents | Ptolemy I Soter I (i.e. Ptolemy (the Savior)), also known as Ptolemy Lagides, c. 367 BC – c. 283 BC, was a Macedonian general under Alexander the Great, who became ruler of Egypt (323–283 BC) and founder of the Ptolemaic Kingdom and dynasty. In 305/4 BC he demanded the title of pharaoh. The sovereign, general of Alexander the Great and founder of the Greek dynasty of Lagidesm, reigned in Egypt from 305 - 282 BC. This sculpted portrait of Ptolemy can be identified by being compared to the currencies that his face was shown on. The extremity of the nose, the skull-cap with the royal headband, the neck and rest of the bust are modern restorations by French sculptor of the XVIII Century, Augustin Pajoi. The marble sculpture originates from either Greece or Asia minor created around the 300th Century BC. This object is part of Scan The World.
