Education in Pakistan's English-Language Press (2023–2025): A Longitudinal Content Analysis of Thematic Patterns and Media Salience

| contents | <p>This study presents a longitudinal content analysis of education-related news coverage in Pakistan’s English-language press between 2023 and 2025. Drawing on a systematically constructed corpus of 927 news items from <em>Dawn</em> and <em>Business Recorder</em>, the research examines how education is represented, prioritised, and framed within the country’s media landscape. Guided by agenda-setting and framing theories, the study analyses thematic patterns, coverage trends, and institutional silences across a three-year period marked by fiscal crisis, political transition, judicial intervention, and growing debates around educational reform.</p> <p>Using a hybrid inductive–deductive coding framework, the study identifies dominant thematic categories including financing and budget, teacher affairs, school education and access, gender and girls’ education, medical and health education, and climate-related educational disruption. Findings reveal a substantial increase in education coverage after 2023, alongside the continued dominance of institutional and governance-oriented reporting. The study also highlights the underrepresentation of issues such as disability, displaced learners, and structural educational inequality.</p> <p>The research contributes one of the most comprehensive empirical mappings of education journalism in Pakistan to date and provides a replicable methodological framework for future media and education studies in South Asia. The dataset and analysis are intended to support researchers interested in media discourse, education policy, agenda-setting, journalism studies, and the sociology of education.</p> |
