- <p>Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex and heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by persistent impairments in language acquisition, social communication, reciprocal social interaction, and the presence of restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour and activities. Over the past few decades, ASD has emerged as a major worldwide public health concern, largely attributable to its steadily increasing prevalence across diverse geographic regions and demographic groups. The precise aetiology of ASD remains incompletely understood; however, current scientific consensus suggests that the disorder arises from a multifaceted intersection of genetic predispositions, epigenetic modifications, and environmental risk factors encountered during critical periods of neurodevelopment. To investigate theories regarding the origins of illness and possible remedies, animal models are created. Autism research has been booming for years because of animal models supporting genetic, biochemical, imaging, and electrophysiological studies. This current comprehensive review article begins with a broad overview of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), followed by an explanation of epidemiology and pathophysiology. Emphasis is on the critical need for early screening along with commonly used clinical screening tools to evaluate ASD; in addition, it probes the role of laboratory animal-based screening models. Collectively, this review underscores the profound importance of robust translational research frameworks in improving early diagnosis strategies, deepening mechanistic understanding, and ultimately advancing the development of more effective, targeted future interventions for individuals living with autism spectrum disorder.</p>
