-
There is a pronounced difference in the participation rates of boys and girls in physical education classes. This difference is partially fueled by the lack of a desirable uniform that is comfortable and easy to wear for a variety of shapes, sizes, preferences, and identities. The current uniform reflects the stereotype that, in the realm of sports and physical activity, boys come first, and the preferences and needs of girls are disregarded. My research aims to fill the gap by designing a physical education uniform for girls that will foster greater participation and willingness to enjoy physical education. By keeping girls in unisex uniforms designed for boys, we are not only taking away their potential to participate in physical activity, but leaving a life-long dislike for physical activity that can have serious health consequences later on in life. During this project, I have reviewed the literature currently available that discusses women’s athleticwear from the passage of Title IX forward and as far back as the 1800s. I have also read studies that involve the dissatisfaction girls experience in physical education classes. I have created a mood board by performing research in the areas of current uniform designs, current athleticwear and athleisure designs, vintage athleticwear and sportswear designs, choice, accessibility, diversity and inclusion in women’s athleticwear. Taking inspiration from my research and applying what I have learned about the gaps in what is currently available, I have designed a uniform that will suit the needs of the current and future generations of students in physical education. I designed a spectrum of uniforms that can be mixed and matched to provide the desired comfort level and fit for all people. This spectrum suits the needs of girls, boys, transgender, and nonbinary students in physical education classes. I have taken one uniform design and brought it to life by creating the physical garment along with pattern pieces that can be used to recreate the clothing. This process has helped me in creating a tech pack that can be brought to manufacturers to immediately begin producing these designs on a mass scale for schools district wide who choose to implement them. The next steps I plan on taking after the completion of this project is to visit school districts and discuss implementing these uniform designs with physical education teachers.
