contents
ABSTRACT.
Background: Biological hazards, the most significant risks in health settings, especially infections, are among the most important risks for healthcare workers in hospitals. Problem Statement: With biological hazards threatening the health and life of HCWs globally and regionally, the situation in Somalia is worse, and there are not enough studies done to determine how far the problem is reaching. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to fill-partially this gap. Significance of the Study: This study is important for researchers and students who are studying the same topic. the study is also essential for policymakers and hospital managers to know the significant burden of biological hazards among HCWs, and to take appropriate action for the safety and well-being of HCWs. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study design employing quantitative methods of data collection. The target population for the study was the HCWs of the Garowe General Hospital. We select 65 respondents from 86 of the total hospital staff. The instrument of the study was standardized, validated, and a self-administered questionnaire. The data were analyzed by the SPSS and the Results showed that 43.1% of participants experienced blood. 35.4% of the respondents were exposed to NSIs. 36.9% were exposed to Droplet/airborne infections. 50.8% of the participants reported exposure to infectious diseases such as HB, HC, HIV/AIDS, TB, and Influenza infections. 96.9% said all PPE is available at the hospital. 95.4% utilize all necessary PPE. Recommendations: All HCWs should receive periodic courses on universal health and safety precautions. They must vaccinate against vaccine-preventable diseases. Post-exposure prophylaxis and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be made available for them. Health settings should have adequate medical waste disposal systems.
