- <p>This study examines the intersection of Italian L2 learning, care work, and identity reconstruction among female migrant caregivers from Eastern Europe. In light of Italy’s demographic aging and increasing dependence on migrant labor in the eldercare sector, the research seeks to identify the linguistic, cultural, and professional needs of these caregivers, with particular attention to their processes of identity negotiation and language learning strategies. Adopting a qualitative approach, the study analyzes oral linguistic autobiographies collected from ten participants - mainly from Ukraine and Russia - currently employed in elderly care. Thematic analysis reveals that most participants articulate a “sought” or “balanced” identity, indicative of conscious efforts toward social and professional integration. Communicative competence is shown to be a crucial dimension of caregiving, although participants report significant challenges related to sociolinguistic variation and intercultural dynamics. Limited access to formal language instruction has led many to rely on autonomous learning practices, underscoring the urgent need for tailored L2 educational programs that integrate linguistic, professional, and intercultural competencies. The study advocates for the development of flexible training models, to accommodate the specific constraints faced by migrant caregivers in Italy.</p>
