| contents |
Sewer systems, as an integral part of urban infrastructure, are required to ensure the safe and uninterrupted conveyance of wastewater and stormwater from urban catchments. One of the approaches that has gained significant attention in recent years, with the potential to greatly enhance the efficiency and reliability of these systems, is the implementation of digital twins. A constituent element of digital twins is a sufficiently spatially distributed sensor network, which enables real-time monitoring of critical hydraulic parameters. However, due to the specific operational characteristics of sewer systems and the high cost of professional-grade measuring equipment, these systems often suffer from an insufficient number of sensors. This paper presents an overview of conventional measurement methods applied in sewer systems, discussing their respective advantages and limitations. Alternative solutions in the form of low-cost sensors are analyzed, with particular emphasis on a solution currently being developed at the Institute for Hydraulic Engineering, which is based on the application of videometric techniques. The specific operational conditions that all measuring equipment used in sewer systems must meet are listed in detail.
|
